Princess Sneezy

I went to the animal hospital to see Sneezy tonight. Have I mentioned how vocal she’s become? When she saw me, she yelled, “Mama! Mama!” (okay; "meow! meow!) and hobbled over to the bars of the cage as fast as she could (she has stuff attached to her leg that seems painful). I put my fingers through the bars, and she rubbed and rubbed against them. She was soooooooo happy to see me. She wouldn’t let me stop petting her. After a while, I tried to visit with the poor dogs there who also ate the poisoned food, but Sneezy had a fit and kept calling for me until I came back to her. The vet tech said it did her a world of good, that it was the first time she’d perked up since she’d been there. It was the hardest thing in the world to leave her again. It just about killed both of us. She cried and carried on like I was never coming back for her.

The vet may check her kidneys in the morning. If she’s doing any better, she can come home tomorrow night. If he waits until afternoon to check them, and she’s doing better, she has to wait until the next morning to come home. We didn’t talk about what would happen if she’s not better. If she gets to come home, she’ll have to be on a special diet the rest of her life – dry food. She’s not going to be very happy about that. After all the stuff I’ve read about pet food these past couple days, I’d never give her canned food again anyway – of any brand.

  1. i just came to your blog because i read your comment at jenny rappaport's blog.

i just wanted to say that i'm so sorry for your loss, and i'm happy to hear that sneezy is doing better. i'm sure your visit gave her body extra motivation to fight so that she can go home with you soon.

again, i'm so sorry about catfish.

  2. Thank you, BB. That's a sweet thing to say. I know Sneezy wants to come home, but she's so young, I don't think she realizes how sick she is. Catfish knew. He got those big, sad, "I'm dying" eyes. It's the saddest thing in the world to see those. We don't know if Sneezy is actually doing better or not, yet. She was just glad to see me, and know I hadn't abandoned her, I think. I would never abandon her. When I have a pet, it's for the life of the pet, no matter what. I once lived in a van on the streets of L.A. for three months because I refused to abandon my Great Dane - and I would do it again.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by, and for the well wishes. Come back anytime.

  3. L- what is bad about canned food? Sorry I am so dense about all this stuff, but maybe I should not be giving my dog soft food either??

  4. Dogs and cats are best off with only hard food. Not only because of the current situation, but also because the hard food helps to keep their teeth and gums healthy. If my daughter were writing this she would tell you how critical dental health is to your pet.

  5. Aw, bless her little heart. Of course, she misses her mama. It does a sick animal so much good when their mom and/or dad is with them when they can be. I'm weighing in on the optimistic side here and betting she'll be home with you soon. She's a young, strong baby.

I feed my dog dry food, but I do give her a "pouch" with her dinner. She considers it a special treat. What I have on hand right now is NOT on the recall list, and I'll be very careful about what I buy in the future.

For those unfamiliar with the situation, the problem is with "wet" foods -- cans and pouches -- which contain an ingredient that's poisoning animals. The manufacturer, Menu Foods, says it switched suppliers for that ingredient, and the problem may lie with that supplier. Anyway, there's no problem with dry food (as far as anyone knows).

  7. Thanks, y'all. I just talked to the vet. She's not out of the woods, but shows some signs of improvement.

  9. That's still a good sign - I know it's awful to be on nails, isn't it? But your visit and reassurance gives Sneezy a reason - and animals are smart, they know a good thing when they see it!

We're still keeping our fingers crossed, though. I want this to have a happy, happy ending.

  10. Sneezy is home, y'all. She's drinking water like there's no tomorrow. The vet has warned me she may still not survive. I'll have to watch her closely. She may continue to need treatment, and will have to be on a special diet the rest of her life. She's not even a year old, yet. Thank you all for your good wishes. I wish I didn't have to run off, but I do. Catch up with you later.

  13. i'm so glad sneezy is home.

i've known other cats that eat only perscription cat foods, and they live very happy lives.

the best medicine, of course, is all the love she has around her.

  14. Thanks, BB. I'm glad she's home, too, but I've discovered a new problem. Her prescription food is made by Menu Foods. How am I supposed to trust it?

  15. Oh, I would have been crying and laughing too to have seen the reunion with you and Sneezy! I am soooo glad she's doing better. I'm hoping for all the best. My cats have always eaten dry food, it's just easier when there's multiple cats in the house. I hope you find a vet that jives better with you as well.
    Love, JuJu Penny

  16. So I'm crying now. Such beautiful pictures and sentiments... poor baby. It's breaking my heart...

Look how big Sneezy is getting! What a beautiful princess! I'm so glad she has a sweet momma like you.

Hang in there, lady. Stick it to those Menu bastards.
